On Tuesday, it will remain icy; only on Wednesday will it be a little warmer – but only at higher altitudes. Dangerous freezing rain is the result.

On Monday, the -20-degree mark was cracked in inhabited valley areas for the first time this winter. This happened in Schmirn (-20.7°C) and St. Jakob Im Defereggental (-20.3°C), according to the UBIMET weather center. The night to Tuesday will be similarly cold. Locally -20 degrees are still within reach; otherwise, moderate to severe frost between -5 and -15 degrees is in sight.

Tuesday will be dry and often sunny, but the temperatures will remain cold. Gentle plus degrees are only expected in the country’s southeast. Otherwise, the permafrost mostly continues.

But a change in the weather pattern is in sight. The cold air mass, which has already flowed in, will be pushed back in the night to Wednesday by the advancing warm front of a low over France from the Alpine region in the direction of Central Europe. However, the milder air will prevail only at altitude for the time being, while the cold layer near the ground could last much longer.

Thus, the risk of freezing rain (blue in the overview map above) increases from Switzerland to Tuesday evening. From the night to Wednesday, the incipient precipitation will also turn into freezing rain between Zurich and Munich (i.e., Bregenz and Außerfern).

On Wednesday, slippery conditions will be an issue in many places along the Danube and some sheltered valleys in the Northern Alps. At the latest in the night to Thursday, one must expect an increased risk of slippery conditions in the east and, thus, even in Vienna.

Snow (pink colors in the picture above) is in Austria, most likely in the Mühl and Waldviertel issue. In the inner Alps, it will remain predominantly dry up to and including Thursday. The exact track of the low is still uncertain, so changes are to be expected, especially in the transition area between snow and freezing rain.
